CTET Exam 2023: Your path to a Teaching Career

CTET is a national-level eligibility exam conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It is held once every year to determine candidates’ eligibility for appointment as teachers in Central Government Schools such as KVS, NVS, and others. The CBSE organizes the CTET exam online in computer-based test (CBT) mode.

  • The exam is held in several shifts for Paper 1 and Paper 2.
  • The CTET Paper 1 is for candidates who want to teach Classes 1-5 (Primary Teachers), and Paper 2 is for candidates who want to teach Classes 6-8 (Elementary Teachers).
  • Candidates who wish to teach Classes 1-8 need to take both papers.

CTET 2023: Eligibility criteria

Paper 1:

Senior Secondary or its equivalent exam:

  • Minimum of 50 percent marks
  • Cleared or appearing in the final year of Diploma in Elementary Education (2 years duration).

Senior Secondary or its equivalent exam:

  • Minimum of 45 percent marks
  • Cleared or appearing in the final year exam of Diploma in Elementary Education (2 years duration).

                                                                   OR

Senior Secondary or its equivalent exam

  • Minimum of 50 percent marks
  • Cleared or appearing in the final year exam of Bachelor of Elementary Education (4 years duration).

                                                                   OR

Senior Secondary or its equivalent test

  • Minimum of 50 percent marks
  • Cleared or appearing in the final year exam of Diploma in Education (2 years duration). OR

                                                                    OR

Bachelor’s degree and a B. Ed degree.

Paper 2:

Graduation degree has passed or appears in the final year of a Diploma in Elementary Education (2 years).

Graduation degree with 50 percent marks and has cleared or appeared in the final year exam of B. Ed.

Graduation degree with 40 percent marks and has cleared or appeared in the final year exam of BEd, according to NCTE regulations.

CTET 2023: Exam Syllabus

The exam is divided into two papers. The details of both papers are given below:

Syllabus for Paper I:

  • Child Development and Pedagogy: How children think and learn; how and why children ‘fail’ to achieve success in school performance. Child as a problem solver and a ‘scientific investigator.’
  • Language Comprehension: Reading unseen passages – two passages, one prose or drama and one poem with questions on comprehension, inference, grammar, and verbal ability.
  • Language 2: Learning and acquisition, Principles of Language Teaching, Role of listening and speaking; function of language and how children use it as a tool, Language Skills
  • Maths: Community Mathematics, Valuation through Formal and Informal Methods, Problems of Teaching
  • EVS: Family and Friends, Relationships, Work and Play, Animals, Plants, Food

Syllabus for Paper II:

  • Child Development and Pedagogy: Addressing learners from diverse backgrounds, including disadvantaged and deprived, Addressing the needs of children with learning difficulties,
  • Language Comprehension: Reading unseen passages – two passages, one prose or drama, and one poem with questions on comprehension, inference, grammar, and verbal ability.
  • Maths: Number System, Knowing our Numbers, Playing with Numbers, Whole Numbers, Negative Numbers and Integers, Fractions, Algebra, Introduction to Algebra.
  • Science: Food, Sources of food, Components of food, Cleaning food, Materials, Materials of daily use, The World of the Living, Natural Phenomena
  • Social Science: Contacts with Distant lands, Political Developments, Culture and Science, New Kings and Kingdoms, Sultans of Delhi, Globe, Air, Water, State Government, Understanding Media, Unpacking Gender, The Constitution, Parliamentary Government, The Judiciary

Strategy to Ace CTET 2023

In order to crack CTET 2023 Exam, candidates need to start by familiarizing themselves with the syllabus and exam pattern.

  • The first step to start the preparation is going though the Previous Year Solved Question Papers in order to get a feel of the exam and the kind of questions asked.
  • You can also determine the difficulty level of various subjects and plan accordingly.
  • Getting an updated Guide book that covers Paper I and Paper II is a better option that compiling notes from multiple sources. Candidates must keep in mind that the quality of the study material matters more than the quantity.
  • Candidates should complete their preparation by solving Mock Tests to analyse their preparation and improve in the areas which offer scope.
